Welcome to the John Marshall Archive Project

Welcome to the electronic database of the John Marshall Archive Project, containing images and texts collected and written by John Marshall (Liverpool 1862– Bagni di Lucca 1928) from the Archive of the British School at Rome and the Sackler Library at Oxford.

John Marshall was an antiquities connoisseur who worked as purchasing agent for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1906–1928. The materials forming his personal archive comprise an extensive collection of photographic prints accompanied by a detailed index card catalogue, in which the art objects photographed for the antiquities trade are accurately described. The database also includes transcriptions of the correspondence between Marshall and various recipients currently held at the Sackler Library, Oxford.

The database complements the collective volume published in November 2022, Ancient Art and its Commerce in Early Twentieth Century Europe. The John Marshall Archive.

Records of objects can be browsed by category or free searched by ID number or keyword. Texts can be browsed or searched by date (yyyy-mm-dd) or keyword in their own section within the database.
